JENNY ALSOP (née East) B Vet Med MRCVS

Jenny qualified in 1987 from the Royal Veterinary College, London. She saw practice with John in 1985 and 1986 and realised what a superb opportunity this was to learn from one of the most dedicated, enthusiastic and pioneering equine reproduction vets in the world.  She joined  the practice, straight from College in 1987, and became a partner in 1992. Jenny  is involved in all areas of the practice but has a particuar interest in  equine stud medicine. Her expertise in this field is such that she travels to many equine studs covering a very  large area .  Her reproduction expertise has  also  taken  her  to  the
Southern Hemisphere to help in a Queensland Equine Practice during their stud season for two seasons.   As well as being an expert in stud medicine, Jenny  is a very experienced all round  equine vet with many years of experience.  She is one of the CHAPS (Coloured Horse and Pony Society) Stallion grading vets and has also assisted in their grading processes for many years. She has also acted as part of a team of Veterinary Inspectors invited to Jordan by Princess Alia and sponsored by Emirates Airlines in connection with 80 km desert endurance rides in 1996 and a 120 km ride in 1998.
GARY KELLY BVM&S MRCVS

Gary qualified from the University of Edinburgh in 2003. He worked in a mixed practice in Lincolnshire for a year and a half where he developed an interest in equine stud medicine. He joined Newcombe and East in April 2005. Gary works in all areas of the practice but has a particular interest in equine stud medicine and equine dentistry. Gary has spent time in both Australia and France doing stud work. He is currently doing a research project on equine reproduction that he hopes to get published. In Gary’s spare time he enjoys socialising with friends. He is also a black belt in karate and attends jujitsu classes several times a week.
PETER TIMMIS BVSc MRCVS

Peter qualified fro the University of Bristol in 1977. He founded and managed his own mainly small animal practice in Tamworth for 22 years. He has been with Newcombe and East for the past 7 years. Peter runs a weekly small animal surgery on Wednesday's where consultations are by appointment only. He also does most of our specialised small animal surgical procedures every Wednesday. Peter has a very keen interest in all aspects of small animal surgical procedures. He also has a small holding with various farm animals. In Peter’s spare time he enjoys squash, walking, sailing, fly-fishing and rugby.
Outside of work Jenny’s interests include dancing (salsa, ballrooom, and latin american). Another hobby, although not so far away from work is the breeding of show, coloured, shire and dressage horses. Jenny has been successful in showing her own horses at County Show level and competing with her horses at Affiliated Dressage, so sees the equine work from all aspects.  Indeed,  Jenny and her husband, Robert Alsop, have recently developed  the  “Chorley Stud and Flock” at their own farm just a few miles from the practice, standing the Homozygous pony Stallion ‘Painted Percy’.  Jenny and her husband also own 4 dogs and a flock of over 400 sheep!

PATRICK DEAN MVB MRCVS

Patrick qualified from the University College Dublin in the summer of 2010 and joined the practice in October 2010. He is enjoying being the "new kid on the block" and all the challenges and opportunities of both small animal and equine work.

JOHN NEWCOMBE B Vet Med MRCVS

John qualified from the Royal Veterinary College London in 1968. He is the founding partner of the practice which he started on his own as a sole practitioner in 1976.

John works almost exclusively on the  equine reproduction  side of the practice. He is one of Britain’s most prominent equine stud vets and is an expert in this field. He has a special interest in Embryo Transfer and successfully performs the procedure at the Equine  Fertility Clinic routinely throughout the breeding season. In addition to every stud season since 1976 in the UK, John has also worked for seven stud seasons in Queensland, Australia in their summer (October to December).

Not only is John a well respected and experienced vet, he is also a prolific scientific author! Over 50 peer reviewed scientific papers written by John on all aspects of equine reproduction have been published to date.

John’s major discoveries and developments include:

Bacterial endometritis caused premature luteolysis
Pioneer use of Oxytocin as part of post mating therapy
First to describe the normal bacterial flora of the mare’s  genital tract (1972)
Site of  conception relative to previous pregnancy (1978)
Described luteinised follicles (1993)
Identical triplets(1995)
Use of Buserelin in dioestrus mares (1996)
Use of intravaginal progesterone device (1997)
First foal by UK  frozen semen (1993)
Quadruplet Pregnancy (2002)

When not working, John is a keen hill walker and gardener. John, like most vets, has his own pets which include 4 dogs, 3 cats, ducks and, unsurprisingly, lots of brood mares! These 40 or so brood mares provide the basis of a pool of recipient mares for Embryo Transfer.
